In English grammar, articles are small but powerful words that come before nouns. They help us understand whether we are talking about something specific or general. Even though they are short—a, an, and the—they play a big role in making sentences clear and meaningful.

Articles are a type of determiner used before nouns. They define or limit the noun and give information about its identity.

There are two types of articles:

1. Indefinite Articles – A and An


2. Definite Article – The

🔹 Indefinite Articles: A and An

These are used when we talk about something general or not specific.

“A” is used before words that begin with a consonant sound.
👉 Example: a book, a car, a teacher

“An” is used before words that begin with a vowel sound.
👉 Example: an apple, an umbrella, an hour


💡 Note: It depends on sound, not spelling. For example:

an honest man (silent “h”)

a university (sounds like “yu”)

“The” is used when we talk about something specific or already known.

👉 Examples:

The sun rises in the east.

The book on the table is mine.


It is also used:

With unique things → the moon, the Taj Mahal

With superlatives → the best, the tallest

With rivers, seas, and oceans → the Ganga, the Indian Ocean
